Ci fermammo lassù che la notte era arrivata da qualche ora. Non avevamo più voglia di camminare. Ancor prima avevamo smesso di parlare. Ci trovavamo in cima a qualcosa, ma non sapevamo quanto in alto. Eravamo andati per tetti, saliti per scale, oltrepassato grondaie. Se c’era uno spazio su cui mettere un piede e sostenerci il peso lo occupavamo.
Poi però la stanchezza ci fermò. Ci mettemmo a dormire a cielo aperto. Bastava abituarci a quel poco di aria che ci sbatteva contro. Così ci disponemmo l’uno addosso all’altro. Ci prese il sonno. 
Mi svegliai che lui dormiva ancora. Mi alzai con cautela e guardai giù dal cornicione. Avevo gli occhi cisposi, ma vidi che sotto la città sembrava salire altissima senza raggiungerci. Eravamo sul tetto di un palazzo.
Poi lo vidi in piedi. Restò immobile qualche istante a guardarmi. «Io vado a vedere cosa c’è» disse.
E si buttò di sotto.

We stopped up there when the night had arrived few hours before. We didn’t want to walk anymore. Even before we had stopped to talk. We found ourselves on the summit of something, but we didn’t know how aloft. We had gone through roofs, climbed stairs, crossed gutters. If there was a space to put a foot on and support our weigh we occupied it.
But at the end tiredness overcome us. We lay down sleeping under the open sky. It was enough getting used to the little air that bumped on us. So we arranged ourselves stuck each other. The sleep defeated us.
I woke up he was still sleeping. I got up cautiously and from the cornice I looked down on. I was bleary-eyed, but I watched down the city going up so high without reaching us. We were on the roof of a building.
Then I saw him standing. Motionless, he stayed a little time watching me. «I go to see what’s there», he said.
And he jumped down.
